Happiness Comes Upside Down – Archival Art Print

$380.00 SGD

An archival fine art print based on paintings from from [The Luckier] Series, for a solo exhibition in 2018.

THE STORY

A picture of a bat can be a visual pun for "good fortune" or happiness as both are pronounced the same way.

The bat is typically shown flying upside down because the character for "upside-down" and the character meaning "to have arrived" share the same pronunciation.

Therefore, saying "the bat is flying upside down" is easily heard as "happiness has arrived".

Here, bat guardians try to bring happiness to a child who is deep in contemplation.

THE COLLECTION

[The Luckier] is a visual exploration of the liminal space we often retreat into when in a state of indecision.

Drawing upon the fear and uncertainty that we deal with in the face of success, feelings of displacement are emphasised by creating characters using Chinese fortune symbology, which can be viewed as a guide or a symptom of stress, or both.

[The Luckier] refers to a kind of ideal self. One who does not doubt opportunity, indulge in self sabotage, or allow the absurdity of an ideal to ruin the pursuit of it.
